Sara Blokland
(1969 The Netherlands) lives and works in Amsterdam. Blokland medium is photography and video through which she explores the representation of the concept of family, colonial and interracial family history through analyzing the confusion and ambiguity between the personal and impersonal. Though the work frequently originates from highly personal material, such as her family, her manner of presentation creates a distance and almost analytical view, thus creating an environment in which the viewer is a true observer and aware of this fact. Blokland’s work reflects on the complicated role of photography in relation to personal history and is driven by her interest in the deconstruction of the ''exotic'' object within photography and its representation.
