Motivated by political, cultural, and social circumstances, Holten works in a variety of mediums to calculate meaning in contemporary life, this is given form through; installation, sculpture, found objects, text, living plants and drawing, all fundamental practices to her work. Holten explores and redefines what we understand by ‘nature’ in contemporary visual art, by placing work in the landscape and public spaces, as well as in publications, gallery and museum exhibitions. Her interest is creating works that contribute to an awareness of place and environment, often reflecting the vulnerabilities implicit in everyday life. Holten’s work has always been peripatetic and her practice unfolds like a conversation, responding to fleeting and contingent circumstances.
