Silvia Russel
Silvia Russel‘s (the Netherlands, 1969) drawings are instantly recognizable and unique with their use of thick, black lines and hints of monochromatic acrylic paint. At times she works in an extremely precise way, emphasizing the smallest detail, at other times the drawings are created with thick rough lines. Russel often stages her characters, usually female, in a somewhat bizarre and outlandish environment, reinforcing the power and mysteriousness of her subjects. The work is heavily set in community roots as she observes social groups within different urban communities and engages them in activities with the aim of sharing stories. This interaction is translated in the form of large-scale drawings, small diarist images or projects designed specifically for certain architectural locales
