Propped Fronds, 2009
Artificial leaves and latex house paint
Size varies, 28 inches at highest point
Twelve artificial fern fronds lean against each other in six pairs. They are arranged in ways naturally possible but improbable. With glossy house paint, the flocked leaves are each painted on the backside in one of four colors. Each leaf is a meeting of artificialities, of flatnesses.
Herd III, 2010
Paper, string, map tacks
23 x 40 inches
The heads and feet of nine different animals, pinned to the walls and joined by black string, come from vastly different biospheres, denying environmental specificity. Proportionately accurate, the animals are in a herd that is more representative of a zoo than of a naturally occurring assortment.
Head Array, 2009
Gesso on Mylar
24 x 18 inches
The heads of a tiger, a moose, a camel, and a giraffe sprout from the body of a giraffe, creating an unwieldy mass atop slender animal form. White on translucent ground, this a pale amalgamation of mammal identities culled from a book of studies on animal anatomy.
One Ends, 2009
Gesso and graphite on Mylar
14 x 18 inches
The pale, fatty form in the center of the field the joined back ends of a polar bear and a domestic bull

Toy animals, florescent light bulb, aluminum lamp

“Withershins” (a term defined both as a counterclockwise and also as a direction contrary to the natural course) is a counterclockwise ring of toy animals of varied quality and proportions, arranged within the confines of an aluminum lampshade hung from the ceiling. In the florescent light, about an inch of animal legs and undersides is exposed.
