Penelope Umbrico (photographs) presents a unique and challenging approach to quintessential issues of representation in contemporary culture, including how images are used to construct and communicate consumer desire, and whether or not the growing volume of images we view online fosters a critical visual literacy. This volume, Umbrico’s first monograph, is accompanied by a series of essays, appendices of source material, excerpts from theoretical works, and other material serving as resources for engaging further with the work and issues involved.

The book is an overview of the past five years and features series of drawings, which were inspired by the communities and habitants of neighborhoods in New York (Bed-Stuy), Berlin (Steglitz), Eindhoven (Strijp-S) and Amsterdam (North). Russel would immerse into the neighborhood by living there while attending and teaching at community centers. She would hear their stories and create works coming forth from these neighborhoods. The book literally folds into two sections as the second part features the drawings that were made by the woman and children in Amsetrdam (North). The result is a very intriguing juxtaposition of the viewer and the participant.

LMAKprojects is pleased to present A Fold in The Fabric, an integrated exhibition
and media performance series featuring artists whose works often fall into the
boundary zone between exhibition object, installation environment and live
performance. These artists conjure systems of relations between objects in the
world and their media representations, often manipulating both in the moment of live
performance.
